Grave accent
Also called backtick or backquote.
How to type it
Left pinky.
Common uses
- Over a vowel, the grave accent marks the stress or sound in words like the French è and the Italian città.
- On US keyboards it shares a key with the tilde, in the top-left corner.
Less common uses
- In Markdown, text wrapped in backticks is formatted as code.
- Older shell scripts use backticks around a command to substitute its output into another command.
- Programmers usually call it a backtick, since it rarely appears over a letter in code.
