Common uses

• U is a vowel with several sounds, as in cup, use, and put.
• In text messages, u is often short for you.

Less common uses

• U and V were once written as the same letter and became separate only in recent centuries.
• U is the chemical symbol for uranium.
• In the United Kingdom, U is a film rating for general audiences.
