Yen sign
How to type it
Mac: Option + Y. Windows: Alt + 0165 on the number pad.
Common uses
- The yen sign is the symbol for the Japanese yen, as in ¥1,000.
- The Chinese yuan uses the same symbol, so context or a currency code such as JPY or CNY tells them apart.
Less common uses
- The sign is a capital Y with one or two bars, and both names come from a character meaning round, for round coins.
- Yen has no minor unit in everyday use, so prices in yen are written as whole numbers.
